The early thread techniques performed with dissolvable threads were unsuccessful at achieving the predictable results surgeons wanted for their patients. The problem revolved around the tiny cuts made into the filaments. Intended to create barbs, these cuts often caused the threads to snap, releasing the lift that had been achieved.

The InstaLift differs in that the suture material used to secure tissue features bidirectional cones rather than barbs on the threads themselves. Threads are inserted at one point and they exit in a carefully-mapped position higher on the face. To secure tissue, the physician gently presses on the skin after all threads have been inserted. This motion integrates the cones into superficial tissue, securing it in place for up to two years.
