Correcting Breast Asymmetry

Breast Surgery Scottsdale AZ

There is a common assumption that, while breast size may differ from one woman to another, the size of one woman’s breasts will be equal. We don’t often stop to consider that a woman may have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other. The reason for breast asymmetry is not entirely understood. However, the consequences of this problem are no secret to the women who struggle to fit into clothing and feel confident in intimate situations. Fortunately, having two different sized breasts is usually no more than a cosmetic issue. If a size difference occurs suddenly, though, it is important to undergo a medical evaluation to ascertain why.

Correcting Breast Asymmetry

The progress that has been made in plastic surgery has enabled the trained surgeon to assist patients who wish to create more balance between their breasts. Contrary to popular belief, it is not always necessary to perform breast augmentation in order to correct asymmetry. In fact, today we can consider the unique factors of each situation in the planning of the most appropriate protocol. Questions that are important to consider include whether or not the size of the smaller breast or the size of the larger breast is preferred.

After a thorough consultation and examination, we can plan corrective surgery to:

  • Reduce the size of the larger breast.
  • Enlarge the size of the smaller breast using an appropriate breast implant.
  • Augment both breasts with individually sized breast implants.
  • Perform mastopexy to lift one or both of the breasts.
  • Reduce the nipples and areolae, if necessary.

There is no “right” way to correct breast asymmetry. In many cases, a combination of techniques is employed to achieve the desired outcome.

The benefits of corrective breast surgery last a lifetime. Bringing balance to breast size means fitting into bras without the need for a prosthetic breast form. Most importantly, it means feeling comfortable with your body and enjoying the confidence that stems from that positive body image.
