Breast augmentation has been one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures for several years. This is an indication of the successful outcomes that are achieved with the artful placement of breast implants. It is not surprising that we receive a lot of questions from patients who are interested in enhancing their shape through breast augmentation. It reminds us that some very common and basic questions need to be discussed early on. Here, we answer a few.
Can Anyone Get Breast Augmentation?
For the most part, breast augmentation is an appropriate procedure for the adult who wants to accentuate their physical appearance. Patients between the ages of 18 and 22 may receive saline breast implant. Silicone breast implants are approved for patients aged 22 and older. The happiest patients are those who are healthy, do not smoke, and who have a good sense of self-esteem before surgery. Breast augmentation cannot create this but it can enhance one’s confidence in their appearance. Some of the common concerns that can be addressed with breast augmentation include:
- Naturally small breast size
- Asymmetry between the two breasts
- Tubular breast shape
- Deflated shape due to pregnancy or weight changes
What Are My Implant Options?
This seems like a basic question but it isn’t an easy one to answer. Breast implant options fall first into the categories of saline or silicone. However, there is more to it than that. The question about breast implant options involves expectations related to outcome. For example, what will the breasts look like or feel like? Breast implant options that we review during our consultation include type, texture, general size, shape, and profile. Together, the characteristics that are selected lead to the most natural look and feel for each patient.
What is Breast Augmentation Recovery Like?
Patients often have concerns that breast augmentation recovery will be painful. It’s not that bad. At first, prescription pain medication is needed to reduce soreness and tenderness. The most noticeable side effect of surgery that patients may notice is that they feel drained and need more rest. However, within the first week, comfort and energy are significantly improved. After the first week, patients may return to low-impact work. Lifting and strenuous exercise or work activities must be avoided for up to 6 weeks.
