Many men find it difficult to love the way they look because of the size and shape of their breasts. Adults have a very clear expectation of what male breasts should look like, and what they shouldn’t. Therefore, when a man’s breasts take on the size and shape we would typically expect on the female body, problems with self-confidence are virtually inevitable.
Men in the Scottsdale area can find the help they need at Ong Institute. Before we treat gynecomastia, we conduct a thorough consultation to help us understand what may be affecting the growth of breast tissue. According to studies, the causes of gynecomastia may differ somewhat with age.
Adolescent Gynecomastia
According to a study released by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), gynecomastia is present to some degree in 50% to 60% of young men. In most cases, breast size and shape are expected to subside as hormones regulate more efficiently over time. However, if a teen does not experience spontaneous reduction after two years of gynecomastia, it may be beneficial to consult with a physician about hormone testing. In some cases, surgical treatment is warranted for the teen with gynecomastia. In the meantime, parents are encouraged to be open and supportive of their son as he manages the emotional toll of having excessive breast tissue.
Adult Gynecomastia
Hormone imbalance may also be involved in the presence of gynecomastia in adult men. Here, too, we may suggest hormone testing to determine if estrogen is dominating other critical hormones. In addition to dysregulated estrogen and testosterone, adult men may also be affected by alcohol consumption, certain drugs, and a thyroid disorder. Any of these factors may lead to exaggerated growth in the breasts.
Treating Gynecomastia
The more we discuss gynecomastia openly, the better we can understand the impact this condition has on a man. Furthermore, research has also led to scientific advances in the treatment of excess breast tissue. Gynecomastia isn’t treated based on the age of the patient but the extensiveness of the problem. Many men benefit from fat reduction using liposuction. Some men also need glandular tissue excised and loose skin surgically tightened. Dr. Ong utilizes the most appropriate surgical techniques based on each patient’s needs.
